The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer behind many legendary styles worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has passed away aged 80.

He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's classic music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."

Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his most recent collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to enroll at the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he began designing men's fashion at the company Stirling Copper and was behind the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that Sir Mick Jagger wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to blend menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating outfits for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included a number of outfits for her American tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered more than five decades, Price staged what would be his last show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

Design circles laments the passing to a authentic original whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
