Strong winter winds caused walls to collapse upon fragile shelters housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after more than 24 months of intense airstrikes and severe shortages of aid.

Truce Provides No Respite from Severe Elements

Although a ceasefire has been active from last fall, aid groups report that residents do not have the sufficient housing necessary to survive recurring winter storms.

Medical staff at Shifa hospital, which took in the bodies, reported on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

Separately, the Gaza health ministry stated on Tuesday that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia overnight.

"The world has enabled us to witness loss of life in all its forms," stated a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have witnessed all imaginable reasons of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Crushed in Tent Collapse

According to the medical center, three people of a single family — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his 15-year-old relative, and his daughter-in-law — were killed when an 26-foot high wall fell onto their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least 5 others were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the rubble that had entombed their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Emergency

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene supplies throughout Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population live in improvised tents since their houses were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups say an insufficient amount of building supplies are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Casualty Figures After the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, which is part of the administration, says more than four hundred and forty people have been killed by Israeli fire and their bodies brought to hospitals since the ceasefire went into effect. The ministry maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered largely accurate by UN agencies and outside analysts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, spokesperson for the UN children’s agency Unicef, stated on that day that at least 100 minors under the age of 18 – sixty boys and forty girls – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire began because of military operations, such as unmanned aerial vehicle attacks, air raids, tank shelling and use of bullets. Those figures, he explained, represented cases where enough information had been gathered to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be higher. He noted that hundreds of children had been injured.

"While 'explosions and gunfire have slowed' under the ceasefire, they have not ceased," Elder informed journalists at a press conference in the Swiss city by video link from the Strip. "Therefore what the world now terms calm would be viewed as a crisis in any other place," he concluded.

Another Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s residents of more than two million people has been fighting to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring lack of humanitarian aid and a lack of sturdier temporary housing, which is urgently required throughout the winter months. This marks the third winter after the war between Israel and Hamas began on a date in late 2023, when militants attacked southern Israel and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one more into Gaza.

The local health authority says over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
