No fewer than 16 people perished and more than 40 were hurt when assailants fired on a Hanukah event at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have called a act of terrorism.

As of the newest reports, authorities have confirmed the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to hospital.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but investigators think their ages are between 10 and 87 years old.

Listed are the individuals who have been named to date.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he worked as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the arrival of their youngest child just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, saying they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The pair were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced immense hardship in their youth. They had subsequently relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister said that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of antisemitic hatred that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was among those killed in the incident, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people taken to hospitals, a significant number remain receiving treatment, with several in critical condition. Those hurt comprise two police officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Sources state he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he described the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
