Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

The Women's Super League club are finalising completing the signing for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from Bayern Munich.

A Marquee Acquisition for United

Schüller, who has half a year remaining on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to multiple sources, all the paperwork for the transfer are now finalised.

Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen United's Forward Line

The experienced striker's signing should represent a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been highly reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of the German international comes at a time when United appear to be building momentum.

Recent performances feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the winter break has brought additional activity:

  1. The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, a popular figure since joining in 2023.

Regarding Miyazawa’s new deal, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”

Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the American league, said: “You can feel how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the Champions League.”
