Meteorologists have indicated a chilly beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead Amid Alerts

The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are planned to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Celebrations Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be perfect for fireworks shows, with dry conditions and clear skies. Readings are due to be cold, so additional clothing vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, skies will be cloudier, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Widespread Snow Warnings for Friday

Moving into Friday, weather warnings are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

• Disruptions and cancellations are likely on the transport network.

Readings Forecast to Plummet Further

As 2026 begins, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to plummet as snowfall and high winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, potentially hitting 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Alerts Released

Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities explained this indicated the weather was likely to trigger significant impacts across medical and care provision. This involves a potential rise in the mortality rate among the elderly or unwell or those 65 and older.
