Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Whenever a significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. But it is an essential concession for the industry of video games, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, however the design in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
