The English Team to Launch Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground

The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Etihad Stadium, provided that they attain the anticipated entry for a tournament hosted across most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.

City’s stadium has not staged an English men’s game since eight years ago, when the visitors were beaten 2-1 in a warm-up game, but is expected to welcome the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.

England are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley, but, in the event of winning Group B, their knockout stage opener would be held at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Competition Launch and Rally

The championship was launched at an ceremony in a London landmark on the previous evening. Senior figures from European football’s governing body and the organizing bodies were heckled as they entered the site by approximately 50 protesters, who demanded the Israeli team to be expelled from the sport because of the Gaza crisis.

Placards were displayed with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists called out: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Schedule

The opening game of the European Championship will be staged at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on a Friday in June 2028, a match that will include the Welsh team if they qualify.

Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the title decider, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5pm.

It is anticipated that an earlier start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the following campaign, will cater to family audiences and help engage a wider spectrum of fans.

Host Nations

The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will take part in the preliminary stage; two guaranteed slots will be held in reserve for any that fail to qualify for the tournament through that route.

Stadiums and Knockout Stage

Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the nine tournament locations. Every stadium will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the quarter-finals played at every host’s main arena.

The draw for the qualifiers will be held in Belfast, which was removed as a venue city last year when it became clear Casement Park could not be renovated in time, on 6 December 2026.

Tournament Vision

“It will be a tournament for the supporters and a festival of everything we cherish about the sport – its fervor and power to unite individuals.”

More than three million admissions, a all-time high for a Euro tournament, are projected to be released to attendees.
