The network's Leading New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, not long after, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique tone. Haha, You Clowns emerged as heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by bleakness, this show's earnestness struck a chord and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
On December 18th, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two more seasons. This gives showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose defining trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four central characters.
"My deepest thanks go to the audience of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for seasons to come."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who embraced the show and supported its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about following this lovable family navigate their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to the rise of certain blockbuster franchises.
“There's this level of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we just have to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially be part of that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences more opportunities to experience the gentle humor of the unique Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
