On his first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” New York City, promising “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his tenure.

A Historic Leader

The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hands are upon the levers of change,” Mamdani stated.

Ignoring advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule boldly and broadly.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Challenges

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his administration begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
