Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... For Now.

The creative mastermind never anticipated that Pluribus would emerge as a massive hit. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

As the debut season of the hit program wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—Gilligan and his team recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.

“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. I have never looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever want to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of Gilligan’s best intentions, there’s it's impossible to ignore the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The most practical strategy is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by online forums.”

“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.

The Big Question: Will Vince Gilligan Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Given that the writers are not listening by fan response, does that mean they already know how Pluribus will ultimately end? In short yes… in a way.

“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. This approach has served us in well on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”

Alternatively, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
