Young Australian Charged for Supposedly Attaching Googly Eyes on ‘Cast in Blue’ Artwork
A teenager from Australia has appeared in court after allegedly defacing a sizable blue sculpture of a legendary being by applying googly eyes to it.
The 19-year-old, 19 years old, participated remotely at the local court in South Australia on that day, facing with one count of damaging property.
Officials commented at the moment of the recent event, the local council explained that surveillance video showed a individual putting artificial eyes on the artwork, which locals have nicknamed the “Blue Blob”.
Ms Vanderhorst did not enter a plea and told the judge she was ill, according to news outlets, with the magistrate recommending her to find a legal representative before her upcoming hearing in the final month of the year.
The following day the reported event, the local mayor stated that repairs to the much-loved community sculpture would be costly as the adhesive eyes could not be detached without harming the art piece.
“This intentional vandalism to a cherished community art is inappropriate and disrespectful,” City of Mount Gambier mayor remarked in September. “It is not harmless fun, it is costly - it is also disappointing to those people of our society who have embraced Cast in Blue.”
The mayor said the local government would pursue the “significant” repair costs from those responsible for the damage.
When the sculpture was initially suggested, it drew mixed reactions from the local community due to its cost and design.
Costing A$136,000 ($89,000; £68,000), the sculpture represents a legendary giant animal, with the sculpture’s designers inspired by an ancient marsupial ant-eater found in local caves that was “massive, lumbering and fascinating”.
